Rector's is, on all accounts, an unfortunate story. After committing a fatal shooting at a night club, Rector had been persuaded by to turn himself in to the authorities. However, when Officer Robert Martin arrived, Rector shot and killed him, then turned the gun on himself. Amazingly, Rector survived his suicide attempt, but with brain damage that was equivalent to a lobotomy. Though his defense argued he was no longer mentally competent to stand trial, he was tried and convicted for both murders, and sentenced to death. Those who thought Rector now incapable of understanding his crimes and death sentence may cite his last meal for further support; apparently, Rector didn't eat the pecan pie, believing he could save it for later.

That is incredibly sad. And yet another good reason why the death penalty should be abolished.
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad. This poor guy killed a nightclub doorman over a $3 cover charge, a cop and than bungled his own suicide. I fell terrible over how he was victimized by the legal system.

DeleteI maybe an ass but I feel no pity. If he committed the crimes when he was brain damaged then yea, but he knowingly killed two people then botched his suicide. He got what he deserved.

DeleteI didnt to this very day realize that the death penalty was objectively wrong.In watching an inmate served the ceremonial last meal something kept tugging at me saying it was wrong we shouldn't be doing it...im no bleeding heart liberal and I have loved ones too and id probably be one of those who took revenge myself,but in watching this I instinctively know its wrong to put people to death which is weird because up until this very moment I supported the death penalty wow to be wrong for so long and not even know it well im glad God works in mysterious ways.
